The Headbanger is a performance I created after The Martial Artist. It continues to explore the process of mark-making while simultaneously investigating the identity of the artist within the tradition of Abstract Expressionism. Using the ready-made character of “The Headbanger”—a figure typically seen at rock concerts—the performance recontextualizes this mainstream persona to create a painting using his rock ‘n’ roll hair as a brush. The props used in the performance are transformed into art objects or artifacts, later exhibited within a white cube gallery setting.
